Bjork to release second duet with Thom Yorke
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008I’m sorry, I think my head just exploded. NME reports that Thom Yorke (that’s Radiohead’s frontman to you, if you live under a rock) was kind enough to lend backing vocals to Bjork’s forthcoming single, “Nattura,” due out in the U.S. on October 20th. The song is named for an Icleandic environmental protection organization that Bjork has supported in the past, and it’s not the first collaboration between Yorke and Bjork (who I shall henceforth refer to as B’yorke). The pair dueted on “I’ve Seen it All,” from 2000’s Selmasongs, the soundtrack to the brilliant but supremely depressing musical, “Dancer in the Dark.”
As a fan of both artists, I’m eager to hear what these crazy kids concoct. Now, back to sewing my swan dress Halloween costume.
Seriously.

Monday, October 13th, 2008NASA commissions nerdcore rap track
Wednesday, September 24th, 2008How’s this for nerdcore? At the request of NASA, London-based rapper the Metro recently recorded a track devoted entirely to astrobiology, in order to make the tricky subject more easy to understand. So how’d it feel to be essentially dubbed the nerdiest rapper in the land? “Being commissioned by NASA to produce the ‘Astrology Rap’ was a great compliment,” says Metro.
Check out the video below. I can’t help but think that this is something my best friend and I could have cooked up in our youth (she’s literally an astrophysics genius; I’m a nerdcore rap alum).

Basement Jaxx — My Turn
Thursday, September 11th, 2008
While I don’t mean to inundate you with posts about Basement Jaxx, I just read on Pitchfork that the duo has posted a newish track, “My Turn,” for stream on their MySpace page, and it’s a lovely one–I’ve had it on repeat for about 30 minutes. Think Bjork strings, acoustic guitar, and Devonte Hynes of Lightspeed singing wistfully over some crunchy beats. What could be better?
The song was released on last month’s EP, Planet 1, which is available in the UK on vinyl, via XL. For those of you who can’t be bothered with MySpace pages (I’m one of you!), there’s a YouTube embed above.

Thursday, September 4th, 2008Bryn Christopher — The Quest
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008
Bryn Christopher’s debut video landed in my inbox the other day, and it’s worth a watch. The British singer’s got a sick voice, for sure–he opened for Amy Winehouse on her last tour, and “The Quest” is already being used in promo spots for Grey’s Anatomy. Bryn’s debut album, My World, is due out on September 16th, and if you’re interested in catching him live stateside, he’s got two U.S. dates slated for September, hitting the Viper Room in Los Angeles on the 22nd and Joe’s Pub in New York on the 24th.
And, because I’m a sucker for any kind of insight into the production process, get a peek behind the scenes of The Quest after the jump (my favorite part is the PAs furiously puffing cigarette smoke around ).

Diddy Complains About Gas Prices
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you know it’s serious when Diddy starts complaining about something. Anyone who keeps up-to-date with Diddy’s video blogs on YouTube knows what I am talking about. On his 12th video blog, Diddy begins to complain that gas prices are too high and he can no longer fly his private jet.
Aww, Diddy! I completely sympathize with your situation. If I couldn’t fly my private jet, I would get a camera, complain and put it on YouTube too. [lol]
But in all seriousness folks, you never know; maybe gas prices will start to decrease. I mean c’mon! What isn’t possible through the power of Diddy?
Didn’t you see the Burger King commercial?

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008Kanye West — Good Morning
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008
Geez, Kanye seems to have his music video cannon set to rapid fire. After releasing his Olympic-themed video just two weeks ago, he’s out with a new clip for Good Morning, which is a sweet little anime video featuring furry creatures and a hover Delorian. Good times.

YACHT — Summer Song
Friday, August 22nd, 2008
Dear Jona from YACHT,
Just saw your new video, Summer Song, today. Well played, sir. Anyone riffing on Tapeheads gets a gold star in my book, though your striking resemblance to Jon Heder from Napoleon Dynamite is, on occasion, distracting.
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Melanie Donnelly
P.S. Please rejoin The Blow immediately, kthxbai.

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008Techno Classics - Ian Pooley “Chord Memory”
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008When you’re talking about techno and house, the seminal “Chord Memory” by Frankfurt’s Ian Pooley took the world by storm 1996. One of the first tech house records, “Chord Memory” followed Pooley’s 1995 monster “Celtic Cross.” This single cemented Pooley as one of the most prolific house music producers of the era. And, he continues to release music on his own label, mainly fusing Brazillian rhythms with house music.

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008Dntel — Rock My Boat
Saturday, August 9th, 2008
I stumbled upon this video by Dntel (AKA Jimmy Tamborello from The Postal Service) on YouTube, and it’s worth a watch. The song, “Rock My Boat,” is just lovely, featuring vocals by Mia Doi Todd, and the video incorporates some arrestingly homespun animation.
The song can be found on Dntel’s 2007 Sub Pop release, Dumb Luck.
