Netmix Media launches Digital Strategy Works

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Digital Strategy Works Home PageYes, it’s been a minute between posts, but I’ve been insanely busy working on projects with my new digital consultancy, Digital Strategy Works.

Netmix has been this pro-hobby, if that makes any sense. I’ve actually been working full time and going to school at NYU for the last 5-years. I graduated in May with a Bachelor Degree in Digital Communications and Media.

While I love writing this blog, it hasn’t been my first priority. I know that shows given the time between posts, but I try my best to update when I can. Given the economic turmoil we’ve faced over the last few years and the demise of the music business as we once knew it, I knew it was important to focus on work first and the hobby second. I always say, you have to have a base from which to work.

Okay, so even though I always say it, I ended up throwing that advice out the window—sort of.

In November, I left my full-time job. Yes, in this economy, I actually LEFT my job! I know. Call me crazy. I’d been working for a web development company in Long Island, but I really missed the New York City digital media and music scene. Long Island just wasn’t where I wanted to be every day. I felt really disconnected from the community. It was time to make a change.

I was passing up so many opportunities making the 3-hour+ commute. I’d been running myself ragged going back and forth. Not only was I missing out on all the nightly Meetup.com events and other entrepreneur and start-up gatherings, I was wearing myself down in the process.

If that wasn’t enough to do, I’d also taken on the side role of Director of Interactive for the National Museum of Hip-Hop. And, along with DJ Ming, Harold Stephan and DJ Chad North, we’ve been running 20dot20, a monthly networking event for the interactive and advertising music industry. Between driving back and forth to Long Island, Netmix, and my other extracurricular activities, I decided to go back to entrepreneurship.

Given my 15-years of web development experience, I thought I might as well just launch Digital Strategy Works and put that knowledge to work. This new addition to the Netmix Media portfolio provides strategy digital media consulting services to individuals, entrepreneurs, start-ups and corporations with a focus on the media & entertainment industry, including music, nightlife, fashion, film and television. We’re building web sites on Wordpress and Drupal, e-commerce platforms on Magento, and mobile applications for Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

It all starts with the planning and execution of a measurable end-to-end digital strategy that makes an impact. In today’s competitive online marketplace, an effective digital strategy is executed across an array of online and mobile applications. This includes nformation architecture and user experience design, creative direction and graphic design, web and mobile development, search engine optimization, e-commerce and monetization, and social media and online marketing. There are so many things to know. Since that’s what we do everyday, we’ve become experts in the field and are passing on that knowledge to you.

Please visit the web site at http://www.digitalstrategyworks.com to read more about Netmix Media’s latest addition. We’re currently offering 2-hours of Wordpress consultation through March 31 for $250.

Netmix Status Update

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Okay, so we’ve been kind of quiet here at Netmix over the last week and a half, since the Minitek Festival concluded The reason? Well, I’ve started a new full-time gig as VP of Product & Business Development at Zaah Technologies in Farmingdale, NY, about an hour from my home in Westchester. Getting into the swing of things on multiple projects and products is time intensive and has taken my daily focus off the blog for a minute.

Given that my commute is an hour from my home in Westchester County, if I could blog while driving, that would be a wonderful thing. Maybe I can v-blog my thoughts from the car! Kind of like a cross between “Taxi Cab Confessions” and a NASCAR event. Driving the Long Island Expressway everyday sure sharpens your driving skills. I just hope I don’t pick up the Long Island accent!

I’ve been a client of Zaah’s for the past three years on multiple projects, including StarStyle, where I was VP of Music Services, as well as a few consulting projects I worked on in tandem with White Space Group, a product strategy and digital incubator run by my friend and former StarStyle CEO, Ashley Heather.

On top of of all that, I also started my final two classes at NYU. This semester, I’m taking Database Design and Final Cut Pro. Now, I already know Final Cut to some extent, but I could use a refresher. And, who wants to write papers in their last semester? Not I!

In December, I’ll graduate with the Bachelor degree that eluded me all these years. I can literally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Actually, I do have one credit left to complete, as I only transferred in 9 credits when I started the program in 2003. Because of the odd number of credits transferred in, it’s left me with a single straggler. To complete the credit, I might do a study abroad in Digital Photography in either Abu Dhabi or Florence. My girlfriend, Missy, and I are looking into the options and she’s helping in the decision-making process.

I’d love to go to Florence again. Spend three weeks in Italy? I’m not mad at that. Will be awesome to have that experience. I’ve been to Florence, Sienna and Rome, but only for a week. I’d love to take an Italian class while I work on my digital photography skills and bring some Italian culture into the Net-mix!

In additon to all of this, I’ve been working on two projects with one of my partners, Madsol Desar. The first is assisting a client in Chicago in securing a performance by the modern queen of Salsa, La India. Confirmed just yesterday, La India will perform at the Congress Theatre in Chicago. The event is a combined voter registration drive and networking opportunity. A popular Chicago DJ will play music around the performance, which is expected to last 75 to 90 minutes. Should be a great show.

Another event Madsol and I had been working on was a b’day party for Blacksmith Music’s President, Corey Smyth, at New York’s hottest new downtown nightspot, Santos Party House. The event, which took place last night, was heavily attended by the who’s who of hip hop, including Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Jeru the Damaga and DJ Pete Rock. Pete layed down a heavy set and was on point. I was running around too much to get a slice of that birthday cake. Maybe next year!

blacksmith8.jpg

The great thing about Santos, is its unpretentious. A new breed of club where it’s more about the musical experience and party atmosphere than velvet rope and bottle service. Both upstairs and downstairs sound systems are INCREDIBLE! They rival, if not surpass, any club in the city.

On a side note, Melanie Donnelly, who also posts to this blog, is joining the team at Zaah. She’s been busy learning how to drive, so she can get her license and do the commute by car to Farmingdale. Now that we’ll both be in a office together, we can focus our efforts on Netmix a bit more. In fact, Zaah are partnering with Netmix to provide us with technology services under their incubation plan. We’re already in the process of revamping Netmix in a myriad of ways that will become more apparent over the next few months.

That being said, we’ve been developing a new Netmix Media business plan and financial model, building a board of advisors and taking the steps to reorganize Netmix.com and bring to market DJGig.com, which I can’t get into just yet. We think you’ll love it when you see it.

Gotta run!

Netmix Global House Podcast featured on Beatportal.com

Beatportal Community Home Page

Beatportal.com, the daily blog journal run by the folks at Beatport.com, where kind enough to run my latest Netmix Global House Podcast in the Community feed section. You can check out the posting here.

Many companies are now looking to users to generate content for their blogs. Hiring bloggers is an expensive proposition against revenues. If you’re traffic doesn’t cover the cost of the hosting and content production, then it’s smart to look to the user community to develop content for a web site. We may be doing that ourselves very soon!

On another note, we’re moving away from Podpress for Wordpress as a Podcasting plug-in. It seems the developer is no longer supporting the application since 2007. As far as we can tell, Podpress has become extremely problematic, conflicting with more recent plug-ins, to the point that it breaks the plug-in repository in your Wordpress admin. We found the new Podcasting plug-in. When used in conjunction with a Feedburner_Feedsmith plug-in, we think it works quite nicely.

Podcasting supports iTunes, but it does not have links to the other podcasting web site featured through Podpress. It also does not host a download link with its player, nor does its player show the number of downloads. A bit disappointing, yes, but do I really need to tell people how many podcasts have been downloaded? Or, is that just a bit of ego on my part? I’ll go with the ego and forgo displaying the number for now. As long as I know what it is and that number is in overall subscriptions, I’m going to say that’s more important to Netmix growth over the long term.

That being said, my workaround was to simple. I added a text link under the Podcasting player provided by Feedburner to allow anyone to subscribe to my podcast feed. That way, it will ping users who have subscribed to the podcast with updates, in the same way that Podpress functions.

In a nutshell, I think we’ll be better off for the time being. Feedburner is quite a powerful way to organize and distribute feeds. For Netmix, that’s another great analytics tool, which compliments our Google Analtyics and GetClicky accounts.

My new Netmix license plate

Netmix License Plate

Despite the $4-a-gallon gas, since I moved to the suburbs with my lovely girlfriend, Missy, getting around hasn’t been the easiest. The time was definitely right to go mobile. It’s been about 15-years since I’ve actually owned a car. Living in the New York City, I didn’t much need one and would just rent if the need arose.

Of course, what better than to celebrate the new wheels with this “NETMIX” vanity license plate. Pretty cool. Not only do I own the domain name, but now the New York license plate too!

Vince Hearn, head platenut at platenuts.com even did a write up about my new plate! How cool is that. Platenuts features vanity license plates from car owners around the world. Thanks for nod, Vince!

Netmix.com Podcast – Global House Mix by DJ Tony Z

Friday, December 28th, 2007

After a few starts and stops, I’ve finally gotten around to finishing up my latest 3-hour mix show. Things have been hectic over the last few months and I just didn’t have the time to focus on it. But, it’s finally done!

I love the 3-hour format, because you can really stretch out and program a variety of tunes into the set. So, download to your desktop and transfer to your portable device—or simply just listen to it here.

I’ve also provided links to download each individual track from Beatport.com when available. I know I was hard on Beatport in the past, but the service finally got around to building out a text linking program through their partnerships with Linkshare, an affiliate network that provides companies with the tools to build out affiliate programs. I found most of the tracks, but there were a few I couldn’t track down. It might be because they are new and haven’t pushed an update to Linkshare yet. Beatport have also created an API through LinkShare, which I hope to use in the future. But for now, we’ll just keep it simple.

Would love to know what you think, so please come back and post your comments. Enjoy!
