This story is from the market research firm, eMarketer.com. It is a very interesting look at current web video viewing habits. The poll measured web video viewing habits for July ’07. Notice that 45% of the respondents polled watched music videos, which is an increase from metrics previously released by other research organizations.

My Digital Life Conference at the Jacob Javits Center
I checked out the My Digital Life expo at New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center today. It was pretty cool if you're a video game fanatic. Companies ranging from Microsoft, Dell, Electronic Arts, Toshiba and Gateway were on hand, all with their high powered PC's running a wide range of game systems. I'm not much of a gamer, but I did take a bunch of photos just to show some of the intense game systems that are out there right now.
Netmix Group on Facebook
I spent most of today setting up a Netmix Group on Facebook. The purpose of the group is to facilitate discussion around the subject of streaming radio and its impact on the mix-show as we move from traditional OTA radio to digital technologies like Sirius and XM satellite radio and streaming networks like Live 365.
We will also be soliciting commentary on the best DJ software/hardware combination packages like Traktor, Serato, Final Scratch and more. There are four discussion forums to start and I will be posting relevant news and other submissions as best as I can keep up.
Please visit Facebook.com and search Groups for Netmix to join in the ongoing discussion.
Video of the Year: Rihanna feat. Jay Z. – Umbrella
Wow, this was a tough one. Justin spent $2 Mil for his video. Kanye probably spent around the same. But the winning trophy goes to Rihanna. This year, I think she definitely connected on a mainstream level with her audience. Her video was one of the most popular I’ve seen in a while. Everywhere you looked, Umbrella was on the tube, on the web and on screens all across America in retail stores. I’m not sure about iPod downloads, but I’m sure she was hot there too. Add the fact that she can actually sing and you’ve got a recipe for success. I’m not mad at the choice, although Kanye might be. Good thing he’s somewhere else in the building right now, or he’d jump on stage like he did in Europe and start complaining about the injustice.
Next year, I hope I’ll be able to get StarStyle to get up off some dollars and get to the awards myself. Speaking of StarStyle, stay tuned for some hot news that will definitely get us to where we need to be this year.
Moving on, I’m watching the Nelly Furtado performance. Love her! Saw her at the AOL Live concert in L.A. last year. By the way, isn’t it dope that Timbaland is rocking the rave sounds in hip hop tracks. Hope you’ll see more of that.
You gotta love Justin Timberlake. He’s got the voice, the charisma and the dance moves. He’s our George Michael and Michael Jackson of this decade. Okay…maybe not Michael Jackson’s voice, because no one really compares to that, but he’s a performer like Mike and a damn good one at that.
Goodnight!
Best New Artist: Gym Class Heroes
Where was I on this one? Funny, I’d never even really checked Gym Class Heroes. Yes, Tony Z. has been sleeping. Maybe StarStyle has gone to my head. Now I gotta go out and figure out who these guys are and why I totally missed this.
New MTV shows: Kaya or Tila Tequila?
Why is Tila Tequila getting her own dating show? The girl has absolutely no talent. Why would any guy (or girl) in their right mind want to go out with a self-promoting, C-level porn star who has the intelligence of a mouse. If life really is all about the sex, then the relationship will be so shallow that respectable porn stars will scoff. I can’t believe I’m even writing about it. Yes, we the media are responsible for her improbable rise to Internet infamy, so I’ll shut up now.
On the reverse, I’m kind of digging this new show, Kaya. It seems to be about a girl fighting for her self-respect while on the cusp of rock star infamy. That’s what I got from the 30-second commercial anyway. Let kids see the real of the struggle. Let them understand that being a rock star is not all about fame and fortune. There is a tangible, emotional and physical cost. Hopefully, this show will not just glamorize Kaya, but show the dark side of world of rock and roll.
Female Artist of the Year: Fergie
Okay, so Fergie’s a now show. What’s up with that? Ah, I could care less. Let’s talk about 50 and Kanye. I really do think Kanye is the new voice of hip hop. He’s gonna take 50 out of the box on Tuesday, 9/11. The battle of the superstars is going to come down to seeing that hip hop has taken a left turn. Gangsta is over. The party in Kanye’s suite is rockin, it’s a happy vibe. Kanye is bringing it back to the days when hip hop was fun. When Nas said hip hop was dead, he may have spoken to soon. If Kanye has his way, he’s ushering in a new era of jump up and get down sounds. Kanye is the man!
Male Artist of the Year: Justin Timberlake
You go boy! Love Justin. But, let’s get real Justin. You know MTV isn’t going to play more videos on the TV channel. Music videos have gone online, Justin. Where have you been? I guess after you blow $2 Million on a video with Scarlett Johansson, you’ve got to try to recoup it somehow. That kind of money has not business being spent on music videos today, especially when most people look at them in 320×240 web videos players. Justin…just keep singing and dancing. Don’t get in the middle of the music debate.
Chris Brown and Rihanna
From lip-synching to an actual singing, Chris Brown rocked the dance moves, but I’m not sure if he was actually singing. I don’t think anyone can sing without it sounding breathy after moving across the stage like that. But that’s okay, what a show stopper! The real singing started when Rihanna made her appearance. Good for her. She’s got the voice to back it up. Okay…there’s a commercial and my girlfriend just flipped to Iron Chef America. I guess that’s better than watching Brett Michaels during the commercial break.
